Another rainy run in GP.  I went through downtown and made it to the track for a few miles, then back home.  Busy day ahead.  Church cleaning, food storage, flu shots, Christmas tree, Anderson dental, etc.  Fun stuff!

Best run in a LONG TIME.  I ran in some pretty crummy parts of Eugene, but I felt amazing and would have ran for hours if it wasn't for other commitments.  The only problem was the light rain that caused my shirt to rub against my chest.  Had to ditch the shirt the final 3 miles and run shirtless.  Not bad for an early December run in the rain.  Lots of strange stares, I'm sure.

Morning run in Eugene.  Around the campus and then to South Hillyard Clinic to see what time they opened.  Couldn't remember so glad I ran there.

I ran around Tanner Dental and then went to All Sports Park and ran three laps on the wood chip, then returned home via the hospital.

11 miles in Grants Pass. I ran through town to Savage St, then the back way to Anderson Dental, then back home via 6th st.  Coldest run of the year--26 degrees.  And to think, three days ago I was running shirtless in Eugene.  I can't complain though; its been pretty outstanding up to this point.

6.5 miles for a warm up to Walmart and then to the HS.  I then tried my hand at speed work for the first time in what feels like years.  5x1600m with 400m rest between each.  1. 5:49 (1:57), 2. 5:51 (1:56), 3. 5:34 (1:58), 4. 5:28 (2:07), 5. 5:16. Felt okay throughout but my lungs weren't loving life on the 3rd and 4th laps with each interval.  Pretty pleased with how I was able to finish out the workout. 800m cool down and then 4 miles back home.  Good start back into the next training cycle.

12 miles around the quiet road west of town.  Followed the highway towards RCC, then looped around the elementary school and fire station.  Eventually made it back via Redwood Rd and Albertsons.  Kept the pace easy throughout and felt pretty good.  After nearly 100 miles, I still don't love these shoes and wish I hadn't bought 2 pairs.

11 miles by going to All Sport Park. I ran 3 laps, then around the closest neighborhood, then 2 more laps and then home. I'm really starting to like running these loops. It's nothing compared to the trails in Eugene, but it gets the job done.

AM: Only had time for 2.5 miles.  Kinda pathetic, but better than nothing.  I think this is the first time I've ran before the Evergreen breakfast in Roseburg.  Usually just sleep in until leaving for the early start to the day.

PM: 10.5 miles.  I got back from Roseburg, finished working for the day and had to get some work done on my car.  I dropped it off, ran to the HS track and ran 9 miles, then ran back to the mechanic right as he was finishing.  Mixed in 150 pushups (25 every 4-5 laps).

I ran through downtown GP to the north freeway exit, then back home.  Makes for a good climb the first half and a nice downhill on the return.

In Coos Bay.  I ran south through town, then back up Highway 101 past the mill and casino (I love the smell of sawdust on a humid morning) into North Bend, then back to the motel for 9 miles total.

15 miles around GP.  I warmed up for 7 miles, then ran a 6 mile tempo portion.  Hit 5:50-5:30 for each mile, then a two mile cool down.  Temps were in the high teens when I got out the door--highly unusual for this area.  It was all I could do to talk myself into running...I'm turning soft in my old age.  About 6 miles into the run it started snowing (SNOWING?) and kept it up for the next 4 miles.  I forgot how painful it is when a snowflake hits your eyeball.  Haha.

AM: 7 miles in the bitter cold.  I did a horrible job packing for this trip and was severely under-dressed.  To top it off, the city of Eugene got snow through the night (as well as the morning while running) so I was cold, wet, and basically miserable.  But the running itself was good.  Ran to Amazon Park and did one lap on the trail, then to South Eugene HS for a few laps on the track.

PM: Under-dressed again.  Ugh.  It wasn't as bad as this morning because the snow/rain stopped mid-day, but I was cold.  Very cold.  Ran back to the HS track like this morning and ran 4 miles, then back to Cafe Yumm for dinner and finally back to the hotel.  10 miles total.

3 miles in GP. Horrible run. I think I'm pretty tough when it comes to winter running, having gone to school at SUU and lived through those winters for 6 years or so. But this was something else entirely. It was raining/snowing/slushy and it was freezing. Part of the problem was not dressing appropriately, but it was like the cold of Cedar with the slushy rain of Wisconsin. I was drenched in minutes, couldn't feel my fingers and toes in less than 10 minutes and quitting after just a couple miles. I can't remember the last run I cut short for any reason, especially weather. So it goes...

AM: 14 miles this morning over fresh snow. I loved it. It wasn't all that old, it wasn't snowing while I ran, but the fresh layer from last night was fun to romp over all around town. Had to go a bit longer to make up for yesterday. Came home and built 5 snowman with the wife and kids and by then I was starving and freezing so I had to call it a day. Hot shower felt nice.

PM: 3 miles on a blue sky afternoon before picking Ryan up from his friends.

7 miles for a 'warm up' which is hard to do when it's in the 20's and raining sleet and snow. That's been a common theme this week. Hopefully next week it's a different story. Anyway, averaged around 7:20's when I hit the turnaround and it was a struggle to hit sub-6 on the way back. A headwind didn't help, but for some reason, I just didn't seem to have 'it' today. So it goes... Can't win them all. 9 mile tempo in 6:03 and more freezing temps, rain, snow blah blah blah. Glad to have this one done with so I could get out of the wet clothes and take a hot shower. Highest mileage in a while. 1 mile cool down.

16 miles around GP.  I couldn't decide where to run this morning and it turned into a little bit of everywhere.  I ran around Albertson's, then into Fruitdale, back across town through the ghetto on M Street.  I made my way back to Hillcrest and up towards Anderson Dental before taking another detour.  Ever since I've lived here, I've planned on running on Starlite St in the NW corner of town.  It requires a pretty intense climb and once on top, the views of the million dollar homes and views across the valley are pretty nice.  Fog this morning prevented seeing much but the climb was rewarding nonetheless.

Made my way back down from the hill, around Anderson Dental and back home via Club NW and 6th street.  Glad to start the week off with a solid run in the bank.

Noon: 7 miles at all sports park with 3 laps around the wood chip trail, then home. Right hamstring was a little tight but loosened up after some light stretching.

Merry Christmas!  I got up at 5:00 to get a run in before the day filled up with presents, junk food, parties and the like.  It was really peaceful and quiet that early and I didn't see a car for the first couple miles.  Loved it.  Very strange to me that when I passed Walgreens at 6:15 on my way back, there were 8 cars in the parking lot.  8?  At 6:15. On Christmas morning?  Can you say 'poor planning?'  That, and I feel bad for the person stuck behind the register...

Ran 5 miles to the HS track, did two quickish miles in 5:48 and 5:22, then returned home.  Funny thing was I was thinking about how we were going to dispose of our Christmas tree and then I ran across the Rogue River downtown and just then, there was a Christmas tree floating downstream.  That's one way to get rid of it I suppose.

10 miles in GP, with 6 of them run around the trail at all sports park. These shoes have hit the 700 mile mark, by far the most I've ever had. And they still feel like they can keep going for another hundred or so. Best $60 dollar shoe I ever bought.

Rough ending to a week that started so promising.  I'm glad I ran a double on Monday and got up early Christmas morning, otherwise this week would have been a disaster.

Both boys were sick on Thursday and they passed it onto me late Thursday night sometime.  Yesterday's run wasn't horrible, but there was no way I could run the planned 20 miles this morning.  Woke up feeling like junk so I pushed the run back until noon, thinking a few hours awake might be better.  By noon I was weak and hungry.  Ate some food and pushed the run back another few hours.  By the time I went at 4, my attitude was shot and after 6 miles, I felt weak and dizzy.  Called it quits after 8 miles.  Hopefully a weekend of rest will help and I can try again on Monday.

I'm still a little sick, but WAY better than I was on Saturday morning.  The first 10 miles were a little funky with sickness, more Christmas junk food, cold weather, yada yada.  From 10-15 I felt great and as I made my way behind Walmart and then I was ready to be done.  Threw in a couple tempo miles at 16 and 17, then just cruised home.  Actual distance was 20.2 but for the sake of nice, even numbers, we'll call it 20 and be done with it.

I ran 15 more miles this year than I did in 2011.  Would have been a lot more but November was rough--desire just wasn't there and it felt pretty darn good to sleep in everyday.  But I still managed 3,333 miles this year, an all-time high for me and a record I'm sure I'll never break.  Just too much going on right now and it will only get busier with 3 kids, work, church, school, etc.  It's been a good ride with the PR's, but moving forward I'll just have to be content with enjoying running for the simple things.  Which I'm fine with.

2012 was a good year for running: New mileage record, PR in the 10K (arguably the best race of my life), first ultra trail race (50k) and first marathon win.  Still looking for the sub-2:30 marathon but if it doesn't happen, life goes on and I'm ok with it.
